History

The company is owned and operated by the Robinson Family and was formed by publisher Gerald S. Robinson in 1952, starting with one paper and growing continually to this day when more than 100,000 people read a Robinson newspaper every week. Starting in the days of linotypes, all the kids put in time, melting lead and pouring the molten liquid into molds for the typesetting machines, running the metal saw, cleaning presses and delivering papers and tear sheets. In their time, they have served as reporters, photographers, editors and advertising sales representatives.

In 1956, the company pioneered the first offset weekly press in Washington State and later grew to be one of the largest web offset printers in the region. In 1989, Mr. Robinson sold the company to American Community Newspapers and retired. Two years later the company was resold to the Seattle Times company, which operated the papers and the press division until 1997 before Mr. Robinson came out of retirement and took back ownership of the newspapers.

Since then the Robinson Family started a new press company and brought back some family members to the newspaper side to handle daily operations.

Throughout the history of the company many people have helped build the papers, bringing a wealth of talent and hard work to the task. Newspapers are the product of a group effort and the company has been blessed to have so many outstanding people work there.

In the face of vigorous competition for the reader’s time from television, other periodicals and the internet, the Robinson Newspapers group continues to grow. This is a testament to the fact that we are filling a need in our communities and we are doing it well.
